On 15 November 2000, Jharkhand was established by the Bihar Reorganization Act as the 28th state of India.

At the time of the formation of the state of Jharkhand, there were a total of 18 districts. Later, these districts were reorganized and six more districts were established. The 23rd and 24th districts Khunti and Ramgarh districts were (12 September 2007) excluded from Ranchi and Hazaribagh districts to form a new district.

There are now 24 districts in Jharkhand. These 24 districts are divided into 5 divisions. These categories are:

Palamu division has 3 districts: Palamu, Garhwa, and Latehar
Headquarters of Palamu Division: Medininagar.
North Chotanagpur division has 7 districts: Chatra, Hazaribagh, Koderma, Giridih, Ramgarh, Bokaro and Dhanbad. Headquarters of North Chotanagpur Division: Hazaribagh.
South Chotanagpur Division has 5 districts: Lohardaga, Gumla, Simdega, Ranchi, and Khunti. Headquarters of South Chotanagpur Division: Ranchi.
Kolhan Division has 3 districts: West Singhbhum, Saraikela Kharsawan, and East Singhbhum. Headquarters of Kolhan Division: Chaibasa.
Santhal Pargana Division has 6 districts: Jamtara, Deoghar, Dumka, Pakur, Godda, and Sahebganj. Headquarters of Kolhan Division: Dumka.

The Siliguri Corridor, which connects Northeast India with the rest of India, is located in the North Bengal region of the state. Geographically, West Bengal is divided into various regions – the Darjeeling Himalayan mountain region, the Terai and the Duars region, the plains of North Bengal, the Rar region, the western plateau and the highlands, the coastal plain, the Sundarbans and the Ganges Delta.

West Bengal is now divided into 23 districts, including the newly formed Alipurduar district (formed on 25 June 2014), Kalimpong district (formed on 14 February 2017), Jhargram district (formed on 4 April 2017), and the former Bardhaman division. District in Bardhaman district and West Bardhaman district (formed on 7 April 2017). The districts are divided into five divisions.

A group of districts forms a division, administered by the ‘Divisional Commissioner’. West Bengal is now divided into three districts, which are grouped under five divisions.
