On 15 November 2000, Jharkhand was established by the Bihar Reorganization Act as the 28th state of India.
At the time of the formation of the state of Jharkhand, there were a total of 18 districts. Later, these districts were reorganized and six more districts were established. The 23rd and 24th districts Khunti and Ramgarh districts were (12 September 2007) excluded from Ranchi and Hazaribagh districts to form a new district.

There are now 24 districts in Jharkhand. These 24 districts are divided into 5 divisions. These categories are:
- Palamu division has 3 districts: Palamu, Garhwa, and Latehar
Headquarters of Palamu Division: Medininagar. - North Chotanagpur division has 7 districts: Chatra, Hazaribagh, Koderma, Giridih, Ramgarh, Bokaro and Dhanbad. Headquarters of North Chotanagpur Division: Hazaribagh.
- South Chotanagpur Division has 5 districts: Lohardaga, Gumla, Simdega, Ranchi, and Khunti. Headquarters of South Chotanagpur Division: Ranchi.
- Kolhan Division has 3 districts: West Singhbhum, Saraikela Kharsawan, and East Singhbhum. Headquarters of Kolhan Division: Chaibasa.
- Santhal Pargana Division has 6 districts: Jamtara, Deoghar, Dumka, Pakur, Godda, and Sahebganj. Headquarters of Kolhan Division: Dumka.
